Merrie Monarch Festival + Hello new website!

May 8, 2011

First things first – whatup, new website & blog!! I’m so excited for this! Now my design work, photography work AND blog all live in the same place now. Finally. Doesn’t this just make life so much easier for us all? (Answer: Yes. Yes it does.) (ps. if you want a fancy new site for yourself, I’ve teamed up with a pretty spectacular developer and we’ve started building some pretty spectacular websites. Check out our web stuff here.)

I was so very honored to be asked to photograph the incredible women of Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa’ahila at the Merrie Monarch Festival this year. For those not familiar with it, it’s the most major hula event of the year, often called the “Hula Olympics”. Outside of Hawaii, most people have never heard of it. Which is truly a shame because it’s spectacular to behold. I danced for Wa’ahila for several years before I moved to New York. Hula and all my hula sisters is one of the things I truly miss most from home and dancing hula was (and still is) one of the best times of my life. So when I say it was a huge honor to get to spend a week photographing their competition experience this year, I mean it.

I’ve only just begun to go through all the pictures. In the meantime, I did quickly grab some of my favorite shots to share with the girls and now, of course, will all of you! I hope you enjoy them and this fancy new website. Happy Sunday!
